I'm so excited to release the 2011 dates for our annual Fall/Holiday Mini Sessions! Current clients will receive an email tomorrow (9/14), and I'll post the details for the public here on 9/15!In addition, I have a very special treat on Thursday! Angel and Josh are getting married! After being together for over 5 years, this romantic couple says it's about time they tied the knot! I had a wonderful time photographing their engagement session in the gorgeous weather--we explored, laughed, battled insane wind...all in the name of capturing their love for each other on film--such a heartwarming sight. I hope that they look back on these images years from now and see the adoration and happiness in their eyes...the silent joy conveyed when they look at each other. Gives me goose bumps! I cannot wait for their big day!

Sweet baby Kennedy--what can I say? Six months is my FAVORITE age for babies...especially when they are this adorable! I love that you can sit them in one spot...and they'll still be there 2 seconds later :). I love their delicious roles and dimples...and how they feel emotions with their entire bodies!

Darling Kennedy is the epitome of everything I adore in 6 month-olds. We had so much fun playing around in the studio with various props and outfits, and she was nothing short of an angel for the entire session! Kennedy is part of our baby plan which means I get to photograph her again! Stay tuned! (I just realized I did not blog her newborn photos, so I guess I will do that next! Sorry!)

I'm Back! And a New Beginning [Dallas Newborn and Baby Photographer]

As many of you know, my step father passed away last week after a long, hard battle with brain cancer. It was obviously a difficult time for my family and I feel so very blessed to have been able to spend time helping my mother to grieve her loss and begin to make plans for her future. Thank you so very much to all my clients who have offered their condolences, messages of support, and have so generously gave me the time I needed to focus purely on my family without worrying about any editing or deliverable deadlines. My time means more to me than anything in the world, and both my family and I will be forever grateful!

Now that I am back and things are settling down, I thought I should get myself back into gear with my blog posting. I've let it slide quite a bit since the busy holiday season! I'll go back through some of the fall sessions to post them here, but I thought today would be nice to start with a new beginning.

Meet the newest addition to the Love family (they have such a great last name!). This darling little girl is already breaking hearts and wrapping her big brother around her delicious little finger! I had a great time catching up with the family and seeing their beautiful portrait wall constructed with prints from several of our previous sessions--hopefully they'll have an easier time deciding which images to add to the wall from this session than I because there are lots of cute ones!

Grandma is an avid and skilled quilt maker--the family had at least 10 quilts in various places around the house, so I couldn't resist our own take on 'The Princess and the Pea."

One of my favorite aspects of this job is being able to watch my clients' lives grow and change. Last weekend, I had the honor of photographing 3 clients who have shared very special moments with me in the past few years, and it was so touching! After each of these sessions I felt so very blessed to be a witness to their special times and honored to be able to capture the next stages of their lives!

One of these clients is the O'Reilly Family. I can remember packing up my gear to head over to the hospital to take some of his very first photos! He was so sweet and tiny...and his parents in such awe of the miracle of his birth...it was breathtaking. And now--Alex is a toddler on the move, exploring every rock and flower, dancing to the music and infusing his family with such joy and love! I cannot wait to see what the future holds for this special family!

It's sneak peek time! I've been absolutely SWAMPED this week and am desperately trying to catch up! Of course, when this happens I always focus on all my client work prior to blogging and updating my website, etc. so there is much to share!

I'll start with the Measels. I recently photographed baby William at the hospital when he was born in May and the family invited me out to their home for another shoot with some of the family. We had a super-hot day and brilliantly sunny day, but these kids were troupers (not to mention adorable), and we were able to get some family portraits for Mom and Grandma! Meet the sweet Sanchez twins! I recently photographed these adorable cherubs who are about 7 weeks old! My preference is generally to photograph newborns within the first week of life; however, I think these adorable babies prove that darling newborn portraits are indeed possible after this time frame!

I am currently on vacation in Missouri and everyone who passes my computer is making a fuss over just how cute they are!

I was so excited to photograph Mary's maternity session--it had been a while since I've photographed an expectant mom and I was looking forward to all the fun things we had planned! Nick and Mary turned out to be so sweet and I found myself just enjoying spending my time with them! We were all over the place for this session, but it resulted in some unique and fun looks that I adore!

Happy Father's Day! I am scrambling to post this for Nikie so that daddy can see his beautiful girls for Father's Day! I have many blog postings to catch up on, but I hope you won't mind that we're out of order!

I photographed these darling sisters earlier this week and I just love how their mom truly customized their session. We were able to take both traditional-style portraits as well as document things that have recently impacted their lives. This was both fun and educational for me--and such a breath of fresh air to try something different!

Here are the girls--they are both just so sweet!

Sophie is wearing a traditional Korean Hanbok from her first birthday. Her mom described the celebration and it sounds really cool. I love how these images turned out--the wind and look on her face seems to fit with a sweet girl looking into her future! Here is a description of the tradition from Wikipedia:

Dol or doljanchi is a Korean tradition that celebrates the birthday of a one-year-old baby. This ceremony blesses the child with a prosperous future and has taken on great significance in Korea. The birthday babies wear a hanbok and a traditional hat; jobawi or gulle for baby girls and bokgeon or hogeon (호건) for baby boys.

The highlight of the dol is a ritual where the child is placed in front of a table of foods and objects such as string, books, brushes, ink and money. The child is then urged to pick up an object from the table, where it is believed the one selected will foretell the child's future. For example, if the child picks up a brush or book, he is destined to be a scholar. If he picks up money or rice, he will be wealthy; cakes or other food, a government official; a sword or bow, a military commander. If the child picks up the thread, it is believed he will live a long life. This is followed by feasting, singing and playing with the toddler. Most often, guests will present gifts of money, clothes, or gold rings to the parents for the child at this time.

And Sydney loves to dance, so to document this time in her life, she wore the costume from her most recent dance recital and showed me some of her moves!

Blessings. Sometimes we pray and wish and hope for things so strongly we feel our heart is bursting. And when you see your nearest and dearest friends going through such a struggle, your heart aches along with theirs! My close friend recently faced such a trial in her life and I am over-the-moon excited that our prayers were answered...twofold! Meet the two newest blessings in my life--Alden and Rowan. I have been excited to share these images for a while, but wanted to wait until her announcements were in the mail! Aren't they adorable?

Edie, Dion and Caden--you guys are incredibly dear to my heart. I learn more about life through our relationship and I am so very happy for you! Congratulations!

When I first met Jaclyn and Andrew, I was struck by how adorable they were together--they seemed as if their relationship had that great depth--the kind that comes from knowing each other for a long time...the kind that is built solidly on a strong friendship. They playfully anticipate each others next move, know how to meet half-way and seem to have a great, grounded outlook on life. Couples like this make my heart melt because it's this kind of love that is built to last...the kind that rolls with the punches of life and emerges stronger with each day, even more deeply rooted than the one before.

It's no surprise that I had a wonderful time photographing their engagement session! We captured stolen moments and attempted to depict a few of the different sides of their multi-faceted relationship. It's only appropriate that regardless of the setting or clothing, they both look incredibly happy and in love. I have done a poor job of updating my blog in 2010, but I'm hoping to start to remedy the situation immediately! As some of you know, I photograph the designs for a local, and extremely talented designer, Abbe Fenimore of Studioten25. In January, her work (and my images) were showcased in Dallas Modern Luxury Magazine as one to watch in their best of the city feature. Some of you may have already seen this if you follow me on Facebook or Twitter, but I thought I would showcase it here as well. This is a shot of the awesome loft space Abbe designed for Martellus Bennett.

Wow--I have been really neglecting my poor blog! I've been busying myself with family, friends...and new year organization projects and all but deserted my blog, Facebook and Twitter accounts! Sorry about that!

I suppose I should begin my first post of the year with something appropriate for the time. Here is our New Year's Card for this year. Lunden and Harper have grown so much, I can hardly believe it. I am proclaiming this year to be the 'year of the family' and am doing everything I can to spend more time with all of my family. I am in the middle of planning visits to see my brother in San Diego, visit my family in Missouri and we are also taking a vacation with Steve's Family this July.

What is your focus going to be this year? What direction do you hope 2010 leads you? When was the last time you stepped back to ask yourself what you really want in life? Are you currently working towards it or is it always something you put off until there is more time, more money, etc. Whatever it is--consider going for it this year, attempt the impossible. What's the worst that could happen? Even if you don't achieve your goals, you'll be much closer after you attempt them than when you started and sadly, 'someday' rarely comes. Give it a try this year--I can't wait to see what happens!

What can I say? Dillon is growing like a weed and has captured my heart hook, line and sinker. I have watched this sweet baby grow over the past year and every time I see his sweet gaze, I can't help but smile. I had such a great time watching him run all over town during his session--what a fun stage! The Copeland Family [McKinney Family Photographer]

I recently had one of those--'oh my goodness, I just turned into my parents' moments. You see, I had the pleasure of photographing the Copeland Family for the second time this year, having photographed both children last fall. I have not seen them since last year, so in my mind the kids were much smaller...a whole year younger...a bit more baby-faced, a couple inches shorter...you get the picture. So anyway, I was completely blown away by how they have matured and changed since last year--no joke. I was seriously flustered! I used to cringe when my mom or dad would talk about how much my friends had grown and/or changed...and yet, that was all I could say to these sweet kiddos...I was a blubbering idiot. Sorry guys.

Seeing their transformation motivated me to go home and just stare at my son for about 15 minutes. Watching him play his little video game--while he battled it out with some strange aliens from another planet, I realized with amazement that time is truly flying before my eyes! My own baby is far from a baby any more--much closer to a grown boy than that sweet gushy toddler I like to think of in my head.

Amy and family, thank you so very much for allowing me to photograph your family--it is truly an honor! And thank you for reminding me how quickly our lives are flying by. Your children are absolutely adorable, and without a doubt, the hint of those same sweet faces I met last year is there...it's just wrapped up in a more sophisticated package. I can't wait to see how they change next year!

I have the best job! I have had a huge influx of newborns lately (which I LOVE) and I was so excited when the sweet 5yr. old Kade brought his darling new baby brother, Brody in for his first portrait session. Kade set an incredible example allowing me to test my lighting and posing and was incredibly patient and well-behaved...it blew me away! And what can I say about Brody? His soft spiky hair and sweet pink lips just make you want to snuggle right in!

I am so behind on blogging--it's shameful! I guess the best place to catch up is from the beginning, right? I'll be blogging something every day for a while to get myself back on track--I'm sorry my fellow blog fans!

I can't think of a better post to start with than Caden's 3 year old session. Caden is such a sweetheart and 100% boy! I have been photographing him since he was about 1 and I cannot believe how much he has changed! I cannot help but smile when I see his images--where has the time gone? I am also so very excited because Caden is going to be a big brother very soon to twins-it's a big job, but I sincerely believe that Caden is the man for the job :) What a great big brother he'll be!

Oh my poor blog--how I have neglected you! I'm so sorry that I have not posted in such a long time! I have been soooo busy with fulfilling orders and editing, that you have just taken a back seat to everything else! First up, a destination portrait session! Nicole and Brian heard I was going to be in Kansas City for a day and asked if I could photograph their girls. Unfortunately, I suffered 2nd degree burns (a.k.a. blistering and tissue damage) to my right palm, wrist and forearm today! It was a Father's Day Surprise gone wrong! I will likely be a bit delayed on my editing as I attempt to limit the amount of pressure I am putting on this intensely sensitive area over the next few days. I am using cold compresses 24-7, so I am hoping to minimize the swelling and inflammation as quickly as I can!

Liam is actually named after his Daddy and Grandfather (see the name on the hat) and both Mommy and Daddy are engineers (who wear hard hats!). We tried to get this sweet boy to stay in the hard hat--but they are after all, a bit HARD! So, we softened it up with some blankets and he went back to sleep like a champ!

Meet Ann and Ben-sweet couple who are getting married in August. The couple wanted to commemorate the magic of their first date, so we revisited the locations via the Dallas Trolley. It was so fun to see them reminisce and reflect on memories from that night!

Back from WPPI and Soul Searching

Hey Friends, Family, Clients and other Random Blog Readers! I am back from my week-long trip to WPPI in Vegas and feeling exhausted...peaceful...and so blessed!

I went to the convention thinking that I would learn new trends, techniques/ideas, and fully expected to be inspired by the classes. I was so wrong! Although the classes I took were pretty good (even better if you bought the photographer's latest and greatest new product or book)...surprisingly the most useful knowledge was gained from my interactions with photographers OUTSIDE of the classroom. I learned so much about photography, human nature, perspective and life from some amazing people--photographers of all skill levels and life experiences. What an amazing gift. Thank you.

This is a very appropriate time for me because I have been feeling like I've been in a rut--doubting my creativity and worrying about everyone with their expensive gear and keeping up with the latest and greatest. Competition. Fear. Lack of originality. Forgetting that it is not the camera that makes a great image, but the person behind it.

But the truth is...nobody else can be me. I know it sounds silly, but it's true. There are always two people in every image I take--my subject and myself. I cannot be removed and nobody else on this planet, no matter how close we are [okay maybe you, Jen, are the exception but for the most part, nobody else] will have my perspective, drive, or desire to stay fresh...nobody else has the kind of life experiences that I have which shape my perspective, or the same kind of love that fuels my passion. I am an original, and constantly comparing myself to others is unnecessary, destructive and smothers my own creativity.

So why am I sharing this? Well, I thought I was alone in this struggle. I thought that I was the only creative person on the planet who battles this internal demon until I saw a fantastic video from Zach Arias an amazing Atlanta Photographer. Wow. What a true artist. To me, great art is something that can clearly speak the message that is in your heart...a message that is so strong, so reflective of your soul's true emotion [whether positive or negative] that you are sure the artist is reading your mind. Great songs, books, paintings all touch me so deeply that it almost feels embarrassing...I relate so strongly that I can almost feel exposed...

Well, Zach's video does just that for me. I see myself in his struggle and sat with my mouth wide open in surprise to hear such an amazing photographer outline his self-doubt, question his motivation and work through the incredible pressure to conform. I am so glad he posted this...I feel less alone. I feel renewed vision, a sincere drive to be my original self and peace in knowing that it is this that makes my work different from the rest.

Watch this amazing video--I am pretty sure it will move you whether you are a photographer or not. Like true art--it is far more about life than it is about the art itself. [the first part is a spoof of the mentality I mentioned earlier--'I am a successful photographer, so now I am going to 'sell' you my secrets in this amazing book, CD, workshop, etc.' This kind of thing is all over in photography right now. Have a good laugh at that, and then settle in for the moving commentary and stunning presentation of the creative struggle.

Mr. and Mrs. Matt Waldon: The Wedding Slideshow [Dallas Wedding Photographer]

Rebecca and Matt have started a new year and a new life together in 2009. These two people have such a sincere and genuine love for each other that it just radiates and you can't help but get caught up in the emotion. Their story is one that movies are made of: They met at a young age. She says he made her laugh like nobody else and he says she was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen. They had a whirlwind romance, but life and circumstance drew them apart. Despite going their separate ways for two years, a flame continued to simmer until one day it all fell into place. It's as if their love was waiting for them to be ready for each other...as if they had always been destined to be together.

You only have to meet this couple to feel this energy...the feelings of love and history...and deep commitment to each other and to their spirituality. Their wedding was one of the most emotional and beautiful weddings I have ever attended-the church filled with the people they love-I don't think there was a dry eye in the place!

Rebecca and Matt-thank you for allowing me to be part of this very special and intimate day in your lives. I hope that your life together is blessed beyond your wildest dreams...because the love you have for each other...it's built to last.

MIA?

Wow--it's been quite some time since I posted...and I hate posting without a photograph, but I really wanted ya'll to know why I have been MIA this week. My studio was closed until Jan. 5 so that I could spend some time with my family over the holidays, but then on Monday Jan. 5, we found out that Steve needed emergency surgery. It isn't for anything serious, but it was urgent and painful.

He had the surgery on Tuesday morning (thank goodness), but his recovery has been slow and very painful. He is spending a lot of time in bed and cannot drive or lift our toddler. That pretty much leaves me in charge of the children unless our babysitter is here! And with a toddler who has recently acquired the super-human ability to find markers, pens, pencils, etc. anywhere in the room and scribble [create beautiful art] all over our furniture and house, just keeping an eye on the kids is quite the task! So I guess I'm not really MIA in the traditional sense (Missing In Action)...I'm more of a MOM-IN-ACTION right now. I know that many of you reading this right now know EXACTLY what I mean! I have a new appreciation for all of you single parents or parents with spouses who travel a lot. Wow.

I am hopeful that he'll be doing better this week, but will continue to be hit and miss this week as well as I care for him and our children. Please feel free to give me a call or send me an email--I'll get to you as soon as I can, it just may be after everyone is tucked in their beds and I have a minute to breathe!

To all of my clients, friends, family and other people I adore--thank you so much for blessing our lives with your presence. All of the wonderful things that have happened to us have been a result of the kindness of others and I am so very, very thankful to have you in my life.

I could have never predicted the events of 2008...and am so incredibly surprised by how much my life has changed and how the business has grown. I've witnessed some of the most moving events over the past year--I've shared in your joy, laughter, tears and in some cases nearly unbearable pain...and my life and my perspective has been forever changed. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I can't wait for 2009 and all the unexpected blessings the new year will bring.

I wish you all the very best that another trip around the sun has to offer!

Now...for those of you who think your kids are difficult to photograph...here are mine! :)

Sick, Sick, Sick...

Hi Everyone--

Just a quick post to let you know that I am sick, sick, sick. I have had a sore throat coming for a couple days, but today I woke up feeling like I was hit by this: [image courtesy of Wikmedia Commons]

Please know that I RARELY take sick days--I can usually type and edit while sick--no problem! However, this time...it's bad enough that Steve is going to come home from work to watch the kids. Let me just tell you that that has happened ONE TIME in 6 years that he has done that. It's pretty bad.

I can't even talk to them because I don't have a voice!

So--don't stress. I will still get everything done--just don't expect to hear from me today. If you have an emergency, please call--just be aware that I don't have a voice, so be prepared to chat in a whisper.

I am so sorry for the inconvenience--I wish there was something I could do, but I just need to get well.

I recently had the fantastic opportunity to get to know a great gal, Abbe, her husband, Dru and sweet puppy, Cricket. We had a great time shopping and playing together!
